We are grateful to be a part of Give Miami Day 2014 and for the support of our community in helping us sustain and grow the Miami Heat Wheels wheelchair basketball program.
Give Miami Day is a 24-hour online fundraising event that allows individuals and businesses in our community an opportunity to contribute to great Miami non-profit organizations. All gifts will be processed through GiveMiamiDay.org and are tax-deductible.
What is Give Miami Day?
Give Miami Day is a unique, 24 hour online giving event that allows individuals in our community an opportunity to build a greater Miami by making a charitable gift to a local nonprofit.
Who are the Miami Heat Wheels?
Miami Heat Wheels’ is Miami’s Official NWBA wheelchair basketball program. Our mission is to provide opportunities to participate, learn, and develop the skills to play wheelchair basketball to persons with physical disabilities of the lower extremities. Our vision is to enrich the lives of the participants and the community through the participation and growth of wheelchair basketball throughout Miami Dade County, the State of Florida, and the United States.
Why should people support MHW and who does it benefit?
Losing the ability to use one’s legs and mobility can and has caused depression, alcoholism, illegal drug dependency, poverty, homelessness, and suicide. Our program does not just give people hope; it gives participants direction and gives recognition to their ability. It’s also an amazing, action-packed sport that the community in South Florida will truly enjoy!
What does funding go towards?
Funding Miami Heat Wheels supports program and general operating costs. Funding is critical for the sustainability of this program, making it possible to provide practice and game space, travel and accommodations for games and tournaments outside of Miami, as well as small things (that add up quickly) like replacement parts and wheels for athletes’ specialized wheelchairs.

Why your support is so important
This fundraising event is so critical to this team, since annual budgets supporting the program have been cut year after year. The money needed is to help the team finish their season, which is headed in the direction of Florida Conference and National Championships! The money goes to several key areas including replacement parts for wheelchairs, tournament fees, travel and hotel costs for away tournaments, just to name a few.

Thanks to The Miami Foundation for hosting this event, and thanks to its partners who have committed an initial pledge to match a percentage of contributions received during the live event.
During the first ever Give Miami Day on December 12, 2012, Miami ignited a movement that had never been seen in our community before. The result was more than $1.2 million raised for 300 nonprofits. Almost 5,000 different donors spanning the city, nation and globe joined the effort.
