2014 NWBA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Miami Heat Wheels will compete in the Division III Championships with 23 other teams vying for a championship. Miami goes in ranked 9th, two positions lower than last year. The Heat Wheels will play the 24th ranked New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday morning.  If we win, they will face last year’s champions, Detroit Diehards, ranked 8th. The Tampa Bay Strong Dogs go to the tournament earning a bye in the first round for being ranked 7th. The tournament is again hosted in Louisville, KY at the Kentucky Exhibition Center. This year, the KEC will host all division championships. Miami finished the regular season 23-5 and a first place finish in the Florida Wheelchair Basketball Conference in Division III. Miami Heat Wheels thank all of our supporters this year that made it possible to continue our valued program nationwide. We will send updates from Kentucky about our games. Wish us success!

Heat Wheels Roll For A Cure

Heat Wheels Rolling on the Wings for Life World Run

By Coach Parnes Cartwright

Miami Heat Wheels wheelchair basketball has been a huge part of my life for four years now. I have been asked to blog about the team for over a year. My first blog post is not about how many teams we have beat, not winning or losing at Nationals, nor how many athletes have gone on from our program to collegiate and pro careers.

My first blog post is about our organization and team’s involvement with helping to affect a cure for spinal cord injuries. Wings for Life World Run is a unique race where 100% of the proceeds go to fund research to cure spinal cord injuries (SCI). Miami Heat Wheels is an official partner in this wonderful cause. Players will participate in the race, and encourage others to join our racing team.

Sign up for the race HERE, and team up with us to find a cure for SCI. Do not forget to sign up as part of Miami Heat Wheels team. Simply enter “Miami Heat Wheels” as the Club/Company on the signup page.

Why race? Is this the year where we find a cure for spinal cord injuries? Will your participation help find it? There is the pessimistic view of, “there is nothing new on the horizon. The “cure” is not around the corner, as is reported.” Do we stop looking? I say NO!, that is not my view, and I encourage all to not let pessimistic views keep you on your couch watching reality shows, or with your head down staring at your phone screen on your social media page. You can socialize with the world in a different way this May 4th.

The race is different than traditional races that have a starting line and a finish line. First, there will be a running race as well as a wheelchair race! There is also a moving finish line. A Catcher Car will begin its pursuit of racers in each race simultaneously around the World 30 minutes after the start. The car at 25 mph as racers try to push or run for their personal best. Racers’ numbers contain a tag that is records their start and finish times to determine final result of distance. This tag also allows friends and family to check if a participant is still in the race via wingsforlifeworldrun.com.

Wings for Life World Run is the most unique race event of its kind. It includes both a running race AND a wheelchair race where the finish line is behind you, with participants in six continents and thirty five locations all over the world – all at the same time on May 4th. Three race locations have been selected in the United States including Santa Clarita, California, Denver, Colorado, and right down the road from us here in Sunrise, Florida!!  Other international race locations include:  South Korea, Taiwan, India, Georgia, Turkey, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand, Austrailia, and Canada.

Our athletes are proud partners of this event, and we encourage you to be ready to rock, because we are ready to roll. Tell your friends. Socialize a whole new way. One race, the human race, together, for one cause, at the same time. We can’t lose. Join hands with us and sign up for the race >> HERE.

When the Sun Rises the Heat Intensifies

Miami Heat Wheels Compete In Sunrise Invitational

The Miami Heat Wheels traveled to Fort Lauderdale for the Sunrise Suns invitational wheelchair basketball tournament Feb. 7-9. The Heat Wheels started off a bit rusty with a Friday night loss against the new NWBA expansion team, the Fort Lauderdale Sharks. The Heat Wheels managed to “Bring That Heat” the rest of the tourney with intensity and focused basketball.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Game 1: Fort Lauderdale Sharks 41 vs 36 Miami Heat Wheels

The Miami Heat Wheels became shark bait Friday night during an underestimated upset. Congrats to the Sharks with a great 1st win over the Miami Heat Wheels. (We will see you in March. Be ready, because fins will be served on the menu.)

Game 2: Sunrise Suns vs Miami Heat Wheels

This game was awesome both teams went in and balled out but one individual was on “Fire”. Ryan Galvez #5 his 1st game as a starter showed up and showed out with a career high 16 points led his Miami team to an outstanding victory.

Big shout out to Ryan Galvez #5 for an amazing prefomance.

SUNDAY

Game 3 : Jacksonville Brooks 32 vs 51 Miami Heat Wheels

Recovering from a relaxed Saturday the Miami Heat Wheels took the court once again. Jacksonville put up a good fight but couldn’t stand the heat in the kitchen as the Miami Heat continued to play heat ball with an outstanding victory.

Mr. Hughes #21 Pre-game Promise

During lunch break Dirrick made a promise to his team

“Yoooo If we beat Tampa I’m jumping in the pool with my uniform on just like that”

Game 4: Tampa Bay Strong Dogs 37 vs 61 Miami Heat Wheels

Save the best for last this rivalry never fails to go the distance. These two teams are unstoppable forces colliding on the court. But, as in all rivalries, one of them must bow with a loss and live to ball another day. Your Miami Heat Wheels pulled off an amazing victory over the Strong Dogs. Carlos Martinez #3 led the Heat Wheels on the boards with 30+ point stellar performance. Talk about “bringing that heat”, the team as whole brought the fire onto the court that game. Now, guess who has to cool off?
